Owaisi claims AFSPA is fueling custodial violence

AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi expressed his concerns about the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Jammu and Kashmir, stating that it encourages custodial violence and torture. This came after reports of three civilians being allegedly tortured by the Army, who were later found dead on December 22 near the site of a militant attack in Poonch district. Owaisi called the killing of these men horrifying.

Owaisi also criticized the government’s compensation, stating that it is insufficient. The Jammu and Kashmir administration had announced compensation and job opportunities for the families of the three civilians. Owaisi emphasized the need for investigation and punishment under civilian laws for those responsible for custodial violence and torture in Kashmir, rather than being protected by AFSPA.

During a meeting with party workers, Owaisi expressed his concerns about the overall situation in Kashmir. He highlighted the recent attack on our forces, stating that it hasn’t been seen since 1991. He also mentioned the alarming issue of custodial torture of civilians. Owaisi questioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s claims that everything has been resolved after the repeal of Article 370 and demonetization, stating that national security has been compromised. He emphasized the importance of taking effective measures instead of relying on dialogue alone.
