Once a symbol of royalty, Pathargatti now suffers from neglect

Pathargatti, a historic street in Madina, Hyderabad, is in a state of neglect and needs immediate attention. This monument was built during the reign of Mir Osman Ali Khan, the final Nizam of Hyderabad. It is currently overgrown with weeds, which takes away from its historical significance.

The stone arcade buildings on Pathargatti were constructed in 1911 under the patronage of Mir Osman Ali Khan. These two-story structures were made from red granite and were designed to have shops on the ground floor and living spaces on the first floor. They were built to provide convenience and security for merchants and their merchandise.

Pathargatti is known for having one of the most expensive markets in India. However, the commercial interests of the area have overshadowed the beauty of the architecture. Signboards, hanging cables, and tree branches have marred the authentic charm of these buildings.

Despite these issues, the pearl trade continues to thrive in the shops of Pathargatti, reflecting the resilience of this traditional business. The Sunday market in Pathergatti is also bustling with approximately 300 stalls offering a wide range of items, from antique chandeliers to modern electronics.

Pathargatti has been a center of commerce in Hyderabad for many years, attracting visitors due to its proximity to historical landmarks like Charminar and Mecca Masjid. Unfortunately, it has been neglected in recent times, resulting in the growth of unsightly weeds, which is eroding its former magnificence.
