Olive Hospital Launches Cervical Cancer Awareness Campaign
Olive Hospital in Hyderabad has started an initiative to spread awareness about cervical cancer. The campaign focuses on prevention and early detection, urging women to educate themselves about risk factors, symptoms, and preventive measures. This effort is especially timely as January is observed as Cervical Health Awareness Month, encouraging women to prioritize their health.
Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide. However, it is largely preventable. The main cause is a persistent infection with high-risk strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Unfortunately, cervical cancer in its early stages often shows no symptoms, making regular screenings like Pap smears and HPV tests crucial. Symptoms such as abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, and unusual discharge usually appear in later stages, highlighting the need for early detection.
Dr. Syeda Afreen Fatima, a Senior Gynecologist at Olive Hospital, emphasized the importance of awareness. She explained, “Cervical cancer can be effectively prevented and treated if detected early. However, late diagnosis and insufficient awareness remain significant challenges. This initiative aims to educate women on the importance of regular screenings, HPV vaccinations, and recognizing early signs.”
Several factors increase the risk of cervical cancer. These include early sexual activity, having multiple sexual partners, smoking, weakened immunity, and long-term use of hormonal contraceptives. To reduce these risks, experts recommend preventive measures like practicing safe sex, taking the HPV vaccine, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Olive Hospital’s campaign encourages women to consult healthcare providers to better understand their individual risks and options for prevention. Personalized guidance based on factors like age and medical history can greatly reduce the chances of developing cervical cancer. This initiative aims to empower women to take control of their health and make informed decisions.
