NMC Requires Medical Colleges to Implement Safety Upgrades

Hyderabad: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued an advisory to all medical colleges and institutions after a tragic incident involving the rape and murder of a medical student in West Bengal. The advisory stresses the importance of creating a safe workplace environment.

The NMC expressed concern over the increasing violence against doctors in medical colleges. It urged all medical colleges to develop a policy to ensure safety for all staff members, including faculty, medical students, and resident doctors. This policy should cover safety measures in areas like OPD, wards, hostels, and other campus spaces. Additionally, it is important to have well-lit corridors to help staff move safely in the evenings, and sensitive areas should be monitored with CCTV cameras.

The advisory also recommended that adequate security staff, both male and female, be stationed at strategic locations such as OPD, wards, and hostels. In case of any violence against medical students, it is crucial for the college management to investigate promptly and report the incident to the police. The NMC requires a detailed report of any such incident to be submitted within 48 hours.
