Nizamabad Central Prison Launches Weaving Unit to Empower Inmates
Nizamabad: The Telangana government has introduced a new initiative to help prisoners gain useful skills while serving their sentences. Soumya Mishra, the Director-General of Prisons and Correctional Services, inaugurated a weaving unit at Nizamabad Central Prison on Monday. This effort aims to rehabilitate inmates by offering vocational training, making it easier for them to reintegrate into society after their release.
The weaving unit will employ 26 inmates and features 13 weaving machines transferred from the Cherlapalli Central Prison. This development comes after a similar facility in Warangal was closed. Since its upgrade to a Central Prison in 2021, Nizamabad Jail has expanded its facilities to include a steel industrial unit, a printing press, a tailoring unit, and a phenyl production unit. The addition of the weaving unit strengthens the prison’s focus on reforming inmates through skill-building opportunities.
The new unit will produce essential items like clothing, towels, napkins, and bed sheets for inmates within the Warangal range. Any surplus items will be sold to the public, generating revenue to further support rehabilitation programs. Inmates working in the unit will not only earn wages but also gain expertise in textile production, increasing their chances of finding employment after their release.
During her visit, Ms. Mishra also toured the sub-jail in Kamareddy, where she interacted with inmates and assessed the facilities available to them. Her visit highlights the state’s commitment to transforming prisons into places of growth and rehabilitation.
Accompanying Ms. Mishra were M. Sampath, DIG of Prisons for the Warangal Range, Sindhu Sharma, In-charge Commissioner of Police in Nizamabad, and Anandrao, Superintendent of Nizamabad Central Prison.
The launch of the weaving unit marks another milestone for Nizamabad Central Prison in its mission to prepare inmates for a better future and support their reintegration into society.
