Hyderabad: Nizam College held a special memorial event to honor its esteemed alumnus and renowned filmmaker, the late Shyam Benegal, who was also a recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
The event saw the presence of prominent personalities, including Professor M Kumar, Vice Chancellor of Osmania University; Professor Kodandaram, Member of Telangana Legislative Council; Professor AV Rajashekhar, Principal of Nizam College; Nira Shyam Benegal, wife of Shyam Benegal; and Piya Benegal, his daughter. Other notable attendees included actor Shakar Melkote, retired professor Rama Melkote, and Indian film director and screenwriter B Narsing Rao.
During the gathering, participants remembered Shyam Benegal’s invaluable contributions to Indian cinema. They highlighted his acclaimed films such as Ankur, Bhumika, Trikaal, and Sardari Begum, which left an indelible mark on the industry and the arts.
Several attendees shared their personal experiences of working with and knowing Shyam Benegal. Actor Shakar Melkote and filmmaker B Narsing Rao recounted heartfelt anecdotes, shedding light on Benegal’s professional brilliance and his deep personal connections. They emphasized how he revolutionized Indian cinema, inspiring generations of artists and filmmakers.
As a tribute to Shyam Benegal’s legacy, a brownea sapling was planted on the campus. This symbolic gesture represented growth and continuity, serving as a living memory of his lasting impact as a distinguished alumnus of Nizam College and a pioneer in the world of cinema and culture.
