Ramchandra Poudel has been airlifted to India for medical treatment after being admitted to a hospital in Nepal for the second time within a month. Poudel, the President of Nepal, complained of shortness of breath and was found to have a chest infection. He will undergo treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. Poudel was accompanied by his son and others when he was flown to India. Last week, he complained of stomach pain and was first admitted to a hospital on April 1. A team of government officials will assess the nature of his illness and report back to the government before any further decisions are made about his treatment.
Poudel, who is 78 years old, won the Presidential election last month after beating his opponent Subash Chandra Nembang. He is a common candidate of the eight-party alliance that includes the Nepali Congress and Prime Minister Prachanda-led CPN (Maoist Center). Poudel received the vote of 214 lawmakers of Parliament and 352 provincial assembly members.
