Nalgonda's Public Distribution System Praised for Efficiency
The Public Distribution System (PDS) in Nalgonda district has been recognized as one of the best-managed systems in the state. Over 80% of beneficiaries in the district regularly receive their entitled benefits. This success has set an example for other regions to follow.
A survey conducted by the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) found that Nalgonda’s PDS implementation is over 100% more efficient compared to other districts. The system has a very low leakage rate of just 3.4%. District Supply Officer (DSO) Venkateshwarlu credited the leadership of Collector Ila Tripathi for prioritizing transparency and efficiency in the system’s operations.
To address irregularities, the Enforcement Department of Civil Supplies has been carrying out strict inspections. Between January and November, 176 cases were filed under Section 6A of the Essential Commodities Act. Among these, 150 cases involved the misuse of PDS rice, 22 were against fair price shop dealers, and four targeted other offenders.
As a result of these efforts, authorities seized 3,348.36 quintals of rice worth Rs 1.76 crore. This proactive approach has further strengthened the district’s commitment to an effective and transparent PDS system.
