Mulugu devastated by heavy rainfall

Telangana is expected to see a decrease in heavy rains starting from Friday. The weatherman predicts that there may still be some occasional light rain or drizzles. Despite this, the state government has decided to take precautions and has declared a holiday for educational institutions on Friday. People living in low-lying areas are advised to stay alert.

During the past 24 hours, the heavy rains have caused significant disruptions in many parts of the state. Mulugu district has been the most severely affected, with people stranded in floodwaters and some villages cut off due to overflowing rivers. In particular, over 40 tourists were trapped near the Mutyaladhara waterfalls and had to be rescued by the army.

The Munneru river’s high water levels led to traffic disruptions for over three hours at the Keesara toll plaza on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway. Traffic has been diverted through Nandigama. Unfortunately, there have also been reports of casualties, with one person being washed away while crossing the Kannaram river on a two-wheeler in Warangal district. The village of Lakshmidevipeta in Mulugu district saw a record-breaking rainfall of 65 cm.

Several old bridges have been damaged by the flooding, leading to the suspension of vehicular traffic. The Prakash Nagar bridge in Khammam town has been closed due to rising water levels. The Health department has taken action to relocate 503 pregnant women from rain-affected areas to safer locations and has set up a 24/7 call centre for healthcare emergencies. Many areas in Greater Hyderabad have also experienced flooding, with NDRF teams and GHMC officials working to drain the water. Miyapur, Gajularamaram, and Toli Chowki are among the most affected areas. A flood monitoring center has been established at the DGP’s office in Lakdikapul to assess the situation. The Chief Secretary, Santhi Kumari, is closely coordinating with district authorities and has deployed special officers to the flood-affected areas.
