The current heatwave in Telangana is expected to last for another four or five days. However, there is good news as the south-west monsoon is about to hit the Kerala coast within the next 24 hours, although it may take five more days to reach Telangana. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is forecasting heavy rainfall in Telangana, which will be above normal levels.
Typically, the monsoon arrives in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 20. Last year, the monsoon arrived later than usual. But this year is different, as a low pressure area is forming and bringing rains to various parts of the southern states.
IMD senior scientist Naresh Kumar stated that some southern states were already experiencing pre-monsoon showers. In northern India, temperatures have risen due to western disturbances and atmospheric conditions. However, experts predict that temperatures will decrease by two to three degrees with the low pressure area in the Arabian Sea.
Temperatures in Telangana districts are high, with some areas like Peddapally and Jagtial reaching over 46 degrees Celsius. Other places like Mancherial and Adilabad recorded temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius, while the state capital saw temperatures exceeding 42.5 degrees Celsius.
The upcoming rains will benefit farmers who are preparing for agricultural activities. Due to the delayed monsoon in 2023, farmers were unable to start farming in June. This year, with the weakening El Nino effect and the La Nina effect, IMD predicts more rainfall than usual.
