Mission Bhagiratha remains stuck in trial run stage, causing ongoing water issues

Despite the arrival of summer, the progress of the Mission Bhagiratha project in Pedpadalli has been slow, leading to ongoing drinking water shortages. The project, which was completed in 2023, has faced challenges with leakages and disruptions in water supply during testing. The allocated funds of Rs 34 crore aimed to address Pedpadalli’s water needs by constructing pipelines and tanks.

The project, initiated in 2016, has been delayed due to persistent leakages and poor quality pipes. Despite completion in 2023, uncertainties remain regarding when the works will be finished. Delays in tank construction, relocation disputes, and pipeline issues have left residents without adequate water since January.

In 2016, plans were made to build tanks at the Government Junior College campus in Peddapalli town. However, due to coordination issues, the tanks were relocated to the agricultural market, causing further delays. The testing phase, which began six months ago, is still ongoing, with officials expressing concerns about Bhagiratha management’s lack of attention.

Due to water shortages, residents have been suffering since January, with overhead tanks falling down and repairs being made. The town authorities are considering purchasing water tankers to address the crisis. Municipal Commissioner Venkatesh has assured steps will be taken to prevent water problems in the summer.
