Government officials are facing growing resistance from the public during the ongoing caste enumeration drive. Many people are questioning the officials’ motives and are concerned about the process. Locals have been confronting the officials visiting their homes for the caste-based survey, accusing them of making false promises during election campaigns and now ignoring their welfare.
Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Rao recently announced that local body elections will be held in January. He stressed that 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) will be implemented before the elections. According to him, the elections should only happen after the reservation for BCs is properly set up.
Ponguleti also criticized the previous UPA government for not establishing a separate ministry for Other Backward Classes (OBCs). He claimed this showed the Congress party’s neglect of issues related to BCs.
The state government’s plans for local body elections and the introduction of increased reservations have heightened political tensions as the election date draws near.
