Dublin-based Medtronic has opened a new Research and Development Growth Centre in Hyderabad. This facility, called Medtronic Engineering and Innovation Centre (MEIC), is the largest centre outside of the US. The company plans to invest around Rs 3,000 crore in the next five years to expand the facility, which will eventually employ 1,500 people. MEIC will focus on training, collaborative innovation, and immersive experiences to shape the future of healthcare technology.

The new facility in Hyderabad will have a total area of 250,000 square feet and will include labs such as Digital Therapy and Innovation, Connected Care, Platform & Tech, Systems Engineering, and Software. It will also provide new desks and wellness facilities for staff. The expansion of MEIC aims to enhance Medtronic’s global research and development capabilities.

Telangana’s IT and industries minister, Mr. Sridhar Babu, expressed his excitement about Medtronic’s presence in Hyderabad. He sees it as a sign of the city becoming a hub for medical technology innovation. The state government is committed to supporting this culture of innovation and aims to establish Hyderabad as a global destination for medical device manufacturing and research and development.

Geoff Martha, chairman, and CEO of Medtronic, emphasized the importance of the company’s research and development team in India for its global product development. The expansion of MEIC is a significant step towards strengthening Medtronic’s research and development capabilities worldwide. Divya Prakash Joshi, VP and site leader of MEIC, stated that the new facility will provide engineering solutions in areas such as software engineering, product security, data engineering, mechanical and hardware design, quality and regulatory, embedded and enterprise software, and systems engineering to various global business units of Medtronic.
