A large rally was held by Naga tribals in Manipur to demand a resolution to the Naga political issue based on the Framework Agreement. The rally was organised by the United Naga Council (UNC) and took place in four Naga-dominated districts of Manipur. After the rallies, the UNC submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the Deputy Commissioners. The participants of the rally held placards and banners and called for an early solution to the Naga peace talks. The Kuki tribal body and Hmar tribes also supported the UNC’s rally. This rally occurred amidst ethnic strife between Kuki tribals and non-tribal Meitei in Manipur, which has resulted in many deaths and injuries. The UNC expressed concern over the delay in signing the ‘Final Agreement’ and stated that it has the potential to derail the peace negotiations. The NSCN-IM’s core demands, including the creation of Greater Nagalim, have caused delays in resolving the Naga issue. There is opposition to these demands in neighboring states, with Manipur experiencing violent protests in 2001. The KIM also expressed support for the UNC’s rally during this critical time of ethnic tensions in Manipur.
