Loss of Dignity and Childhood for Migrant Children in Mahabubanagar

Children of migrant workers in Mahabubanagar are not receiving proper healthcare and education while their parents work at various jobs around the district. Many of these children are forced into child labor and are suffering due to the lack of attention from district officials. An NGO conducted a survey and found that officials, especially from the school education department, are not helping these children. Even funds that were allocated for the district under the Samagra Siksha Abhiyan are not being used or are being taken back by the government.

NGOs are running bridge schools for these children, but they claim that officials are asking them not to show the details of these students on the government’s Prabhand portal to avoid complications. However, a headmaster from Mahabubnagar denies this and says that they have identified around 210 out-of-school children and have uploaded their details on the portal. NGOs estimate that there are around 480 children who need help from the government for their education, health, and sustenance.

The government provides facilities for these children under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyaan scheme, but district officials are not conducting surveys or collaborating with NGOs to identify students in need. As a result, central funds of Rs 4 crore have lapsed, leaving these underprivileged students neglected.
