Legal and Moral Issues in the Shiv Sena Case

The Supreme Court has delivered a verdict on two groups of the ShivSena party, led by Uddhav Thakre and Eknath Shinde. The court found fault with the way the majority in the Assembly was dealt with, but could not reinstate Uddhav as Chief Minister because he had resigned voluntarily. Both groups claimed moral victory. Pakistan is currently experiencing a tug of war between the government and military on one side, and dethroned prime minister Imran Khan and the Supreme Court on the other. The Rule of Law may not be enough to tame ruthless state power backed by the military. The Supreme Court ruled that the elected Delhi state government, not the Lieutenant Governor, will have powers in service matters. The court also criticized Governors for taking sides against state governments. The Punjab and Haryana High Court criticized the police for mechanical behavior in a case involving a television journalist and her colleagues. Portugal has adopted a law permitting euthanasia in certain exceptional circumstances.
