Union Minister Reviews NLC in Chennai
Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, visited Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) in Chennai on Wednesday to assess its progress. He stated that several reforms have been introduced in the Union Ministry of Coal and Mines as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to make India a developed nation by 2047.
The minister praised NLC, which is one of the leading central public sector undertakings in the country, for its contributions. He highlighted its crucial role in increasing lignite production and promoting renewable energy across India.
Significantly, NLC is the first central public sector undertaking to generate 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy nationwide.
Kishan Reddy also spoke about NLC’s efforts to boost coal production in various locations, including Talabira and Macchakata Patrapara in Odisha, as well as South Pachwara and North Dadul in Jharkhand. He noted the swift progress in building the 3×800 MW thermal power plant in Talabira, a project inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi.
Additionally, he shared updates on NLC’s renewable energy projects, which are advancing quickly in regions like Rajasthan, Assam, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The minister proposed that NLC should explore the feasibility of introducing an accident insurance cover scheme for its workers and employees within the next two months.
Later, Kishan Reddy virtually inaugurated two new initiatives by NLC – a museum named ‘Parampariyam’ and a mobile app called ‘NLCIL Wings.’ The event was attended by Vismita Tej, Additional Secretary of the Department of Mines, NLC CMD Prasanna Kumar, and other dignitaries.
