Kapra Revival team chooses innovative wastewater treatment method

The Kapra Revival team in Hyderabad plans to use phytoremediation to restore Kapra Lake by converting waste water into fresh water. This method has been successful at other lakes in the area like Chinna Cheruvu, Yerrakunta, and Novotel Lake. Phytoremediation involves using beneficial bacteria and microbes to clean polluted water, improving levels of BOD and DO.

Kapra Lake, which has shrunk in size over the years due to encroachments, is almost dry with damaged inlets. To revitalize the lake, the Kapra Revival team will work with GHMC and the Irrigation Department to implement phytoremediation, with technical assistance from GHMC. Deepa Shailender, co-founder of the team, highlighted the importance of addressing the blockage of the lake’s inlet and discharging sewage water to rejuvenate the lake.

The team plans to partner with a vendor to carry out the project as nearby areas like Sanikipuri are already experiencing water shortages. They are also seeking support from various organizations to help in the revival process. Some locals suggest that GHMC should also build a sewage treatment plant to ensure proper treatment of all waste water along with implementing phytoremediation at Kapra Lake.
