Hyderabad City Bureau/Mehdipatnam, June 28 (Namaste Telangana): In an ambitious program called “Kanti Velugu”, State Minister Harish Rao announced that eye examinations were conducted for 1.62 crore people in just 100 days, setting a new record. The Chief Minister, KCR, who had announced that such a large number of free eye exams have never been conducted anywhere in the world, inaugurated the program. The program kicked off with the presence of LV Prasad Eye Institute’s Director, Dr. Gullapalli Nagendra. On Wednesday, 12 modern mobile clinics were launched by Minister Mahmood Ali, local MLA Jafer Hussain, Commissioner of Family Welfare Department, Swetha Mahanti, and Superintendent of Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Dr. Rajalingam.
During the program held at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Minister Harish spoke and informed that the state government has provided these machines to ensure better health services for the visually impaired. He explained that these machines would facilitate cataract surgeries easily and quickly with the help of ultrasound technology. Until now, these machines were only available at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, but due to their efficiency, they have been procured for Rs.3.5 crores and distributed to various districts including Mahbubnagar, Warangal, Nizamabad, Sangareddy, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Vikarabad, Nalgonda, and Khammam.
The Minister Harish also mentioned that cataract surgeries using the mobile clinics would cost up to Rs.40 per surgery. He further stated that special training has been provided to the medical staff to conduct these surgeries.
Minister Harish Rao also informed that the mobile clinics were introduced to reach the people directly through Kanti Velugu and conduct free eye exams in villages. Through the Kanti Velugu program, a total of 40.59 lakh spectacles were distributed for free, and another 18.08 lakh prescriptions for glasses were issued.
