Kaleshwaram Project Seeks CAG Assistance to Uncover Financial Irregularities in 3 Barrages

Justice Chandra Ghose Commission on Kaleshwaram is looking into economic irregularities and technical faults in the construction of three barrages – Medigadda, Annaram, and Sundilla. The Commission has asked for help from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), IIT Roorkee, and Pune-based Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) for this investigation.

Justice Ghose has already visited IIT Roorkee to discuss the technical reasons behind the sinking of piers at the Medigadda barrage. The IIT has conducted a study on the damage and sustainability of the structure, with the report being submitted to the government by the contracting agency L&T. The Commission is also focusing on the economic aspects of the three barrages and has requested statistical data from CAG regarding expenditures and loans taken for the Kaleshwaram project.

The CAG has conducted a study and found irregularities in bill payments and project estimations. The Commission is looking into whether the State government inflated estimates to benefit agencies or influential leaders in the previous BRS government. An expert team from CWPRS has also inspected Medigadda and prepared a report for the Commission to analyze.

Starting July 5, the Commission will review affidavits filed by State irrigation officials and hold a public hearing to gather more information. Over 60 affidavits have been received by the Commission, which will use all these details to finalize its findings and make recommendations accordingly.
