Authorities in Hyderabad are taking strict action against wasting drinking water. They have started imposing fines on people who use potable water for unnecessary purposes.
Recently, a resident of Journalist Colony in Jubilee Hills was fined ₹1,000 for using drinking water to wash a car. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) issued the fine as part of their efforts to stop water wastage.
This incident comes after a similar case on March 5, when another resident of Jubilee Hills was fined for using drinking water to clean a motorcycle. Officials have been receiving more complaints about water misuse, leading to increased inspections across the city.
During a routine check, the General Manager of O&M Division-6, Harishankar, and his team found the violation at House No. 8-2-293/82/J/A/20. The resident, Yeratha Shobha, was caught using drinking water to wash a vehicle. As a result, she was fined under HMWSSB’s water conservation rules.
Officials have warned that repeat offenders will face stricter penalties. The municipal corporation is now conducting inspections during water supply hours, issuing fines, and spreading awareness to prevent wastage. Authorities are also encouraging residents to report cases of water misuse through the customer care helpline or directly to officials.
