Gadwal Hospital Holds Meeting on Mental Health and Legal Issues

Gadwal District Hospital conducted an important review meeting on “Mental Health and Legal Issues” today. The session was led by District Superintendent Dr. Indira and aimed to educate patients and trainee students about the legal challenges faced by people with mental health conditions and intellectual disabilities.

Key Guests & Participants

The chief guest for the event was Smt. Ganta Kavitha Devi, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority. Other important attendees included DMHO Dr. S.K. Siddappa, NCD Program Officer Dr. Sandhya Kiran Mai, Dr. Vrushali, NCD Program Coordinator Shyam Sunder, and mental health specialist Pradeep Kumar.

Discussion Highlights

During the meeting, Smt. Ganta Kavitha Devi explained that individuals with mental health disorders and intellectual disabilities often struggle to exercise their legal rights. Their unique psychological conditions and impaired decision-making abilities make it difficult for them to access justice.

To address this issue, she announced the creation of a “Legal Services Unit – MANONYAAY” under the NALSA Act. This unit will ensure that people with mental health challenges receive both medical and legal support.

Raising Awareness

The attending experts and officials provided valuable information about the legal rights of mental health patients and the support systems available to them. The session ended with an interactive discussion, allowing participants to clarify their doubts and learn more about their entitlements.

This meeting was a significant step toward improving access to both healthcare and legal services for vulnerable individuals in Jogulamba Gadwal district.
