Jalpally Lake Disappearing: Land Encroachment Threatens Its Survival

Hyderabad: Jalpally Lake, one of the major lakes near the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), is facing a serious threat from land encroachment. The lake originally had a Full Tank Level (FTL) area of 274 acres, but now the water spread area has reduced to almost half this size. This has given land sharks an opportunity to occupy the dried-up sections of the lake.

In 2013, a survey conducted by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) showed that the lake’s water spread area was 187 acres, with a water level of over 98 meters. At that time, the FTL was more than 100 meters. However, over the years, the lake has seen increased encroachment, particularly within the buffer zone. Activities such as filling the dried portion of the lake with boulders have been reported, even within the FTL area.

Earlier this year, environmental activists filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) due to the growing encroachment activities around the lake. The heightened activity is believed to be connected to plans for extending the Metro Rail from RGIA to Chandrayangutta via Mailardevpally on the Outer Ring Road (ORR). In response, the Court issued notices to the State government and concerned departments in April, asking them to clarify the steps being taken to protect Jalpally Lake and other nearby water bodies.

Local residents have also expressed their concern as the lake’s size has noticeably decreased in recent years. Most of the encroachment seems to be happening on the eastern side of the lake, where farmhouses and other developments have appeared within the buffer zone. Comparing an HMDA map with a current satellite map clearly shows this encroachment.

Jalpally Lake was once known for its natural beauty and was a popular spot for tourists and locals who enjoyed fishing. Despite the rapid urbanization in Hyderabad, the lake had remained relatively untouched. However, its close proximity to the International Airport has made it a target for encroachers. Allegedly, local political support has only made it easier for these encroachers to carry out their plans.
