HYDRAA Saves 200 Acres of Government Land and 12 Lakes in Hyderabad
The Hyderabad Agency for Rainwater Awareness and Action (HYDRAA) has successfully protected 200 acres of government land from encroachment, along with saving 12 lakes and 8 parks, since its establishment in July this year. In an exciting development, the agency is also planning to launch an FM radio station to provide rain alerts and weather forecasts to the people of Hyderabad.

Focus on Protecting Lakes and Water Bodies
Speaking at the agency’s annual press conference, HYDRAA Commissioner Ranganath emphasized the importance of creating awareness about Full Tank Level (FTL) and buffer zones. This is to prevent illegal constructions near lakes and water bodies across Greater Hyderabad. He announced that the agency aims to determine the FTL for 1,095 tanks next year using advanced technology and data analysis.

Use of Technology for Transparency
To ensure transparency in FTL determination, HYDRAA is leveraging high-resolution satellite images and drone photos spanning from 2006 to 2023. Commissioner Ranganath explained that these measures help understand the changes in FTL over time. The agency is also collaborating with Kirloskar Company to enhance its efforts. So far, HYDRAA has received 5,800 complaints, including reports from 27 municipal corporations about unauthorized constructions.

Plans for Demolitions and Restoration
Ranganath stated that HYDRAA would take a more aggressive stance in the New Year, with 15 teams already formed to demolish illegal structures. However, he clarified that HYDRAA’s role goes beyond demolitions—it also focuses on restoring dying water bodies. To support these efforts, 72 teams are being set up under the Disaster Response Force (DRF) to address various challenges.

Tackling Encroachments and Waste Dumping
Encroachments are being identified using satellite images, and the agency is also addressing the issue of construction waste dumping. A geo-fencing survey is planned for 2025 to better monitor these activities. Proposals for restoring 12 ponds have already been sent to the government. Additionally, a new Doppler weather radar is set to be installed in Hyderabad, and HYDRAA is forming a dedicated team to analyze weather data.
