Hyderabad: Inspection of Turkayamjal Cheruvu Following Complaints

The Hyderabad Disaster Response Assets Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRA) Commissioner, AV Ranganath, visited Turkayamjal Cheruvu on Wednesday. This inspection was prompted after residents from Aditya Nagar complained about their crops and houses being submerged due to the closure of the lake gates.

The complaints were raised during the Prajavani programme held on Monday. Residents reported that there was no water present in the area when houses were initially constructed. They also expressed concerns about sewage water being released into the lake, which they believe is polluting the groundwater in their locality.

During his visit, Commissioner Ranganath stated that further discussions would be held with irrigation and revenue officials to determine the full-tank level (FTL) of the lake. He added that experts from IIT, JNTU, and BITS Pilani would also be consulted to address the issue.

To establish the FTL, HYDRA plans to use data from National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC) maps, village maps, revenue records, and other models. The process is expected to be completed within three months.

Ranganath also noted discrepancies in existing records, which show the lake’s extent as either 495 acres or 522 acres. He emphasized that only a scientific study can accurately determine the lake’s FTL.
