Students Protest Appointment of Physics Professor as EdCET Convener

In Hyderabad, students have taken to protesting against the recent decision to appoint a physics professor as the EdCET convener. This choice has caused widespread dissatisfaction among academics, as it goes against long-standing traditions and raises concerns about whether proper educational guidelines are being followed.

Traditionally, the position of EdCET convener has been given to professors from the Education department. These professors possess specialized knowledge in pedagogy and curricula, which are central to BEd and MEd programmes. However, this time, the authorities have chosen a professor from the Physics department, a move many claim undermines the academic integrity of the Education department.

Kalakoti Uday Kumar, president of SFI OU, criticized the decision and pointed out broader issues in the education system. He stated, “The ten years of BRS government failed to give enough attention to upholding the standards of education. After the Congress government came into action, they unveiled ‘Praja Prabhutvam’ and appointed the Education Commission to enable standards of education.”

He added that the current situation, along with the unrest among academics, should not be ignored by the government. The protesters are demanding immediate action to address the issue and restore trust in the academic community’s relationship with the government.
