Hyderabad: Saroornagar Hospital Shut Down for Illegal Kidney Transplants

Hospital in Hyderabad Sealed Over Kidney Transplant Racket

Authorities in Hyderabad have uncovered a shocking kidney transplant racket at Alakananda Hospital in Saroornagar. Dr. Nagendra, head of a government-appointed expert committee, has called for a deeper investigation into the illegal activities. Speaking with ETV, he mentioned that more evidence is needed to confirm if unauthorized surgeries were performed at the facility. However, the probe has faced challenges because of the tense situation at the hospital during inspections.

The illegal racket reportedly targeted financially vulnerable individuals. Dr. Nagendra explained that a network of brokers was used to exploit donors and arrange the illegal transplants, making it a highly organized operation.

The scandal came to light when health officials and police conducted a raid at Alakananda Hospital. The facility, which had been operational for just six months and only licensed to treat minor ailments, was found conducting unauthorized kidney transplant surgeries. During the raid, officials discovered two kidney donors and two recipients undergoing treatment after operations. Medical examinations confirmed that kidney transplants had been performed, and the patients were later shifted to Gandhi Hospital for further care.

Investigators revealed that most kidney donors were from Tamil Nadu and were lured into selling their kidneys for financial compensation. On the other hand, recipients were charged up to ₹50 lakh for the procedures. Brokers and medical professionals allegedly played key roles in facilitating the illegal operations.

Following the raid, the hospital was sealed by authorities. District Health and Medical Officer (DMHO) Venkateshwar Rao confirmed that a case has been registered at the Saroornagar police station. The hospital manager, Sumanth, has been detained for questioning, and efforts are underway to identify and arrest the doctors and brokers involved in the racket.

Telangana Health Minister Damodara Raja Narasimha has strongly condemned the incident, calling it a severe breach of medical ethics. He has directed officials to submit a detailed report on the case and assured the public that strict action will be taken against all those responsible for this illegal and unethical activity.
