The delay in restoring roads that have been dug up for various construction projects, such as laying drainage and water pipelines, is posing a risk to commuters and residents. This is especially concerning during the rainy season when the roads become accident-prone areas. Dug-up roads in multiple locations are also posing a threat to residents.
According to social activists, the recent heavy rainfall has exposed the poor-quality roads laid by the GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) and private agencies under the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP). Many roads in different areas, including internal roads, have been severely damaged, causing inconvenience to commuters.
The city of Hyderabad is currently experiencing heavy rain, which is causing significant damage to the roads. The recent rainfall has led to flooding in low-lying areas and numerous potholes on the roads, making it dangerous for commuters. Driving has become risky due to continuous rain.

Social activists have pointed out that the heavy rain has exposed the poor quality of roads laid by the GHMC and private agencies under the CRMP. Many areas and internal roads have been severely damaged, causing inconvenience for commuters.
“It’s surprising that newly laid roads are unable to withstand rain. There should be a financial and social audit,” said Mohammed Ahmed, a social activist.
Damaged roads and potholes are visible in vital lanes across the city, including Moosarambagh, Begumpet, Indira Nagar, Langer Houz, Malakpet, Saidabad, Chaderghat, Bandlaguda, Falaknuma, Karwan, Jiyaguda, Amberpet, Puranapul, Bahadurpura, Kishan Bagh, and many others.
The heavy rain has resulted in over 3,500 potholes, causing nightmares for commuters. The GHMC claims that patchwork is being done after rain when complaints are received. Repair work is being carried out urgently, and some main stretches of roads have already been repaired, according to a GHMC official.
To make the roads smooth for motorists, it will take some time to fill the potholes as dry weather is needed for patchwork. It’s not possible to fill potholes during rain as the bitumen would get peeled off, added the official.
Pothole-filled roads are causing severe discomfort for commuters. The recent heavy rain has made the roads even worse. Roads and by-lanes in Nacharam, Kavadiguda, Aram Ghar, Mehdipatnam, Nampally, Asif Nagar, Moghalpura, Santosh Nagar, and other areas where flyovers are under construction have deteriorated significantly.
After the rain, roads throughout the city, both in the new and old city areas, have been damaged and filled with potholes. Areas like Srinagar Colony, Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills colonies, Ameerpet, Madhapur, Secunderabad, Shaikpet, Narayanguda, among others, have also been affected.
“The heavy rainfall in the past week has caused significant damage to roads in the city. They have become hazardous for commuting. The rain has eroded the asphalt and washed away the blacktopping, resulting in large potholes,” said Akhil Jain, a commuter in Madhapur.
Many people have taken to Twitter to express their grievances and share images and videos of the damaged roads filled with potholes. “Driving on several roads in the city has become a nightmare for citizens,” tweeted one commuter.
