Heavy waterlogging is being observed in Hyderabad with the arrival of the monsoon season. Residents are upset that officials have not taken enough action to prevent water inundation in neighborhoods. However, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is working to address flooding in the city.
In the past few days, roads have been flooded after rain showers. Although efforts have been made to remove stagnant rainwater, waterlogging has still caused blockages on the roads.
Social activists have pointed out that ongoing works under the Telangana government’s Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) within GHMC limits are far from completion even though the deadline has passed. The SNDP includes various projects like building bridges, repairing drains, and widening stormwater drains.
Delays in these projects could lead to more flooding in the city during heavy rainfall. It is crucial that these works are completed to avoid a repeat of previous situations where neighborhoods remained submerged for days.
Since the devastating floods in October 2020, GHMC has identified over 125 locations affected by waterlogging. While steps have been taken to address the issue at some sites, many projects remain unfinished, including desilting of nalas.
Areas like Tolichowki, Nampally, Begumpet, and Old City localities are among those experiencing significant waterlogging during rains. GHMC commissioner Ronald Rose has assured that efforts are being made to combat urban flooding and make Hyderabad a safer place for its residents.
