Hyderabad Residents Demand Expansion of Stormwater Drains

**Hyderabad:** Recent rains have caused water stagnation in many parts of the city. Despite the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) claiming to have taken measures under their monsoon plan, residents argue that poor maintenance of stormwater drains and open nalas is the real issue.

In areas like Jeedimetla, Gokul Nagar–Tarnaka, Devi Nagar-Malkajgiri, Pragati Nagar-Nizampet, Kukatpally, Red Hills, and Nampally, even a little rainfall leads to flooding. Locals say the stormwater drains need to be wider and better maintained. When they report the problem to officials, only temporary fixes are given.

Some residents mention that drainage pipeline projects are still incomplete. In many places, old pipelines need replacement. “It’s been over a week since I asked the water board for a new sewer line behind the Himalaya Hotel at Sher Galli Bazar Ghat, Nampally. We are struggling to commute,” said Mohammed Abid from Nampally.

“In Gokul Nagar-Tarnaka, a small amount of rain causes water to stagnate. We have reported this many times, but no permanent solution has been made,” said another local resident.

S Teja from Nizampet said, “I reported an open manhole covered with trash more than a week ago, but nothing has been done. With the recent rains, our lanes are overflowing, and water has entered some houses.”
