Water Crisis Hits Western Hyderabad, Residents Depend on Tankers
A water crisis has gripped the western parts of Hyderabad much before the onset of summer, leaving residents in areas like Nizampet, Bachupally, Kondapur, Kukatpally, and Moosapet struggling for adequate water supply. Many have been forced to turn to private water tankers to meet their daily needs. Residents have blamed the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) for not maintaining the infrastructure properly.
Last year, HMWSSB increased the water supply to the western corridor by 4.5 million liters. However, residents in these areas continue to face severe shortages. They believe this issue stems from rapid urbanization, which has outpaced the capacity of the current water supply infrastructure. Additionally, residents pointed out that frequent pipeline leaks and insufficient maintenance work are major contributors to the problem.
Sai Teja, a resident of Nizampet, shared his frustration, stating, “Despite summer still being a few months away, we’ve been facing an acute shortage of drinking water for the past month. Damaged water pipelines are causing massive wastage, and despite filing complaints with officials, no action has been taken.”
B Srinivas, a resident of Bachupally, echoed similar concerns. “We only receive water once every four days, and even then, the pressure is extremely low. This has forced us to rely on private tankers. Despite repeated complaints to the water board, the issue remains unresolved,” he said.
In Kondapur, Suresh highlighted the worsening situation. “Since the start of this month, the borewell supply has been insufficient, and we’re now heavily dependent on private tankers. If this continues, we might have to propose rationing soon. And this is all happening before summer has even begun,” he explained.
Residents are urging the water board to take immediate action by repairing damaged pipelines and implementing better maintenance practices to avoid further escalation of the crisis.
