Hyderabad: Traffic Restrictions for New Year Celebrations
All flyovers in Hyderabad, except the PVNR Expressway, will be closed to traffic on New Year’s Eve. The closures will be in effect from 10 PM on Tuesday, December 31, to 2 AM on Wednesday, January 1. These measures have been put in place as part of the city’s New Year celebrations to ensure public safety.
The traffic advisory was issued by the Cyberabad, Hyderabad, and Rachakonda police Commissionerates. According to the advisory, the Outer Ring Road (ORR) will also be closed for light motor vehicles and passenger vehicles from 11 PM on December 31 to 5 AM on January 1. However, passengers traveling to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGI), Shamshabad, will be permitted to use the PVNR Expressway if they present valid flight tickets. Additionally, vehicles will not be allowed on NTR Marg, PVNR Marg, and Upper Tank Bund during the night.
To maintain traffic discipline, the Hyderabad City Police Commissionerate will deploy personnel at 172 busy traffic junctions across the city. The focus will be on areas where crowds gather for celebrations, such as Tank Bund, Necklace Road, and shopping hubs like Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Punjagutta, Khairathabad, and Saifabad. Officers will also monitor markets, malls, restaurants, and pubs.
Police officials have warned bars, pubs, and clubs against allowing intoxicated customers to drive. Establishments found negligent in this regard will face strict legal action, and the management may be prosecuted for abetting the crime. Drunk driving checks will be conducted extensively across roads within all three police Commissionerate limits. If drivers fail to produce proper documents, their vehicles will be taken into temporary custody.
The police have urged commuters to stay updated on traffic developments through their social media platforms, including the @Hyderabad Traffic Police Facebook page and their @HYDTP X (formerly Twitter) handle. For travel emergencies, citizens can reach out to the traffic helpline at 9010203626 for assistance.
