The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), in collaboration with other organizations such as Rainwater Project, Lions Club, and Osmania University students, has begun restoration works on the 200-year-old historical step wells on the Osmania University campus. The step wells have been neglected for years, but the HMDA has taken the initiative to restore them to their former glory. The restoration works were carried out under the guidance of MAUD Special Chief Secretary Aravind Kumar on the direction of Municipal and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao.
The HMDA authorities, who had previously completed the restoration works of Bansilalpet step well, were studying the ancient structures in Osmania University. University Vice-Chancellor Ravinder, Rainwater Project founder Kalpana Ramesh, HMDA officials, Dr B Prabhakar IFS, SK Meera (OSD, HUMTA), and Engineering Officers met on several occasions to devise a strategy to begin the restoration works of the step wells.
Around 100 Osmania University students, officials, and volunteers participated in the renovation of the ancient well. Volunteers from various organizations such as Rainwater Project, Lions Club District 320(B), Pink Circle, Green Team (Wanaparthy), Environment Students, Civil Engineering Students, Archeology Students, and History Students of Osmania University also lent a helping hand.
The restoration of these step wells is a significant step towards preserving the rich cultural heritage of Hyderabad. Once fully restored, these historical structures will serve as a reminder of the city’s glorious past and will attract tourists from all over the world.
