Historic Qutub Shahi Mosque in Hyderabad Suffers Damage Following Lightning Strike

0

A portion of the historic Qutub Shahi mosque in Hyderabad was damaged by a lightning strike on Monday. The Alem of one of the main minarets broke and fell on the roof, causing panic among the approximately 60-70 children who were inside the mosque at the time. The children were quickly sent home for safety. The damage to the mosque is estimated to be around 3 lakhs and includes burnt electrical items such as microphones, amplifiers, and CCTV cameras.

Local MLA, Kausar Mohiuddin, visited the mosque shortly after the incident to assess the damage. The mosque, which is located on the historic highway between Golconda and Charminar, is about 400 years old and falls under the authority of the TS Waqf Board. Despite its historical importance, it is not considered a heritage site and has never been visited by heritage officials. The mosque committee has repainted the minarets in recent decades and restored the Alem.
