High Court orders HMDA to submit report on lake protection

Telangana High Court Directs Action on Lakes Protection

The Telangana High Court, on Wednesday, instructed the State Government and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) to submit a detailed report on the condition of lakes within HMDA limits. The Division Bench, consisting of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sreenivas Rao, emphasized the importance of protecting these lakes from encroachments.

The court highlighted the need for strict monitoring of lakes and asked officials to expedite the process of notifying the Full Tank Levels (FTL) for all lakes. Additionally, it directed that buffer zone boundaries be clearly marked to safeguard the lakes.

This directive came while the court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed earlier. During discussions, the Government Pleader (GP) for the General Administration Department (GAD) informed the court that preliminary notifications had been issued for 2,793 lakes. However, final notifications for the remaining lakes were still pending. The GP requested three months to complete this task.

The Division Bench, while postponing the case, made it clear that the court would continue to monitor the issue closely. It instructed the HMDA and the State Government to provide updated status reports on their progress.

The next hearing for the case has been scheduled for December 30.
