Ameenpur Lake in Hyderabad is in a dilapidated condition with trash surrounding it. To protect the lake and create awareness, Earth Needs You- Impacts by VISVA Sustainable Foundation, a city-based NGO, has been organizing cleaning up drives. They recently completed 150 days of cleaning up and self-awareness initiative.

Several organizations have participated in this initiative, including TS Biodiversity Board, Ameenpur Municipality, Hyderabad Birding Pals, Animal Warriors Conservation Society, Wild Telangana, HCR – Hyderabad Cycling Revolution, Goodeebag, and Relief Riders Hyderabad.

Ameenpur Lake is India’s first biodiversity heritage site in urban areas, with close to 300 species of birds.

Vinay Manchala, Director of VISVA Sustainable Foundation, explained that their weekly activities include preserving biodiversity at the lake through cleanup and self-awareness initiatives. They have collected around 181.5 kgs of waste. The activities started with five friends on March 28, 2021, and now involve over 500 volunteers who help clean up eight water bodies in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Ravi Sambari, a member of Relief Riders Hyderabad, joined the NGO’s lake cleaning initiative to raise awareness about the benefits of cycling and proper waste segregation.
