Hyderabad: Water stagnation has become a recurring problem in many parts of the city whenever it rains. This issue was once again evident on Tuesday, as several lanes were flooded, and lakes were overflowing. The main cause of the problem is the faulty stormwater drains and blocked nalas, which cannot handle the sudden rush of rainwater.
Even a small amount of rainfall has caused flooding in many localities like Jeedimetla, VST Ramnagar Junction, Nallakunta, Tarnaka, Mettuguda, Secunderabad Station Road, Srinagar Colony, Malkajgiri, Balanagar, Nizampet, Red Hills, and Nampally. The main reason for this is that the stormwater drains need to be widened, and timely maintenance work is not being carried out. Locals have noticed that officials only visit the areas to pump out the water after it rains.
People are facing a lot of inconvenience and frustration due to the lack of proper preparation. “Every rainy day, we, the locals of Tarnaka, suffer as the entire lane gets flooded with water. We have repeatedly complained to the Water department, asking for a permanent solution by fixing the stormwater drains,” said a resident of Tarnaka.
Ramesh, a resident of Nampally, shared his concerns, saying, “Every time it rains, we face hardships as our entire lane gets filled with water. Sometimes, water even enters our houses. This is happening because the pipelines in our area are old and need to be replaced.”
Sai Teja, a resident of Nizampet, added, “We are tired of complaining to the officials to clean the manholes and drains, but nothing has been done. With the recent rains, the situation has gotten worse, making it difficult for locals to use the lane. It would be better if the drains and stormwater systems were cleaned annually, at least three months before the monsoon season.”
