Hyderabad: The Health Department in Telangana is closely monitoring the situation following the outbreak of a new virus called Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China. Officials are currently awaiting guidance and instructions from the Government of India to decide on the next steps.

Director of Public Health, Dr. Ravinder Nayak, stated on Friday that the state is on high alert. The Central Government has already reached out to the World Health Organisation (WHO) to seek advice on protocols to be followed. Once the Central Government issues specific directions, the state will implement appropriate measures. Dr. Nayak also assured that the official machinery is ready and fully prepared to act if required.

The emergence of this virus, which causes respiratory problems, has sparked fears of a situation similar to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, health experts have urged the public not to panic. According to Director-General of Health Services (DGHS), Dr. Atul Goel, there is no reason for alarm. He explained that the Human Metapneumovirus is similar to other respiratory viruses that typically cause the common cold. It may lead to flu-like symptoms in very young children or elderly individuals but is not considered a major threat.

Authorities continue to remain vigilant, and further updates will depend on instructions from the Centre and global health organizations.
