Government to challenge BRS with dam safety report on Medigadda

The damage to three barrages, especially the Medigadda barrage in the Kaleshwaram project, is expected to create a major political controversy in the upcoming budget session of the State Assembly.

The state government has reportedly received information from the Centre that the Union Jal Shakti Ministry will submit the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) report within a week. The government plans to use this report to highlight alleged irregularities in the construction and maintenance of the barrages by the previous BRS government.

Earlier, the NDSA’s interim report had already pointed out poor construction quality at the Medigadda barrage and faults in its structural design. Additionally, the final report from the vigilance department has raised concerns about irregularities in awarding contracts, increased project costs, and unauthorized advances given to contractors, which violated standard rules.

Officials believe that the final NDSA report will be crucial in proving that the former BRS government mishandled various aspects of the barrages, from construction to maintenance. The report also highlights the alleged misuse of public funds, as the project cost increased drastically from ₹35,000 crore to ₹1 lakh crore without proper scientific studies. Senior irrigation officials stated that the Jal Shakti Ministry is currently reviewing the report before its release.

During the budget session, discussions on irrigation funding will likely focus on the Kaleshwaram project and the NDSA findings. The ruling Congress government plans to use this opportunity to hold the BRS accountable while also addressing opposition criticism on issues like Rythu Bharosa, Kalyana Lakshmi schemes, and the ongoing irrigation and power supply problems in the state.

Additionally, officials noted that the Justice Ghose Commission, which is reviewing the Kaleshwaram project, will consider the NDSA report and make recommendations for further action against those responsible.
