Government Implements Stricter Regulations on SIM Card Sales, Enforces Comprehensive Verification Process

The Indian government is making it harder to get new SIM cards. They want to make sure it’s safe and secure. The Department of Telecommunications has issued two circulars to regulate the use of SIM cards. One is for individual users, and the other is for telecom companies.

1. Stricter rules for stores:

Stores that sell SIM cards need to be more careful. They have to do background checks on their employees. If they don’t, they can be fined up to 10 lakhs for each shop. These rules start from October 1, 2023. Existing stores have until September 30, 2024, to follow these new requirements.

2. Police control in certain areas:

In places like Assam, Kashmir, and the northeast, telecom companies have to undergo a police check in stores before they can sell new SIM cards. This is for added security.

3. Responsibility of telecom companies:

Big telecommunications companies like Airtel and Jio also have to check the stores that sell their SIM cards. They have to make sure the stores follow the rules to keep things safe and secure.

4. Detailed verification for everyone:

When you buy a new SIM card or get a replacement for a lost or damaged one, you will go through a detailed verification process. This process ensures that only the right people have access to the SIM cards.
