Hyderabad Metro to Expand to Medchal and Shamirpet
The New Year has brought exciting news for Hyderabad residents, as the Telangana government has decided to extend the Metro rail network to Medchal and Shamirpet. This expansion aims to improve connectivity to the northern suburbs of the city.
Once completed, the Metro will provide services along two new routes. The first route will stretch from Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) to Shamirpet, covering a distance of 22 kilometers. The second route will extend from Paradise to Medchal, spanning 23 kilometers. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed expansion.
The decision comes in response to long-standing demands from citizens for better public transport options in northern Hyderabad. Residents of these areas have been requesting Metro services and have even held protests in the past to highlight the need for improved connectivity. The Chief Minister has now approved the extension as part of the Phase-2 ‘B’ works, and the government will seek necessary approvals from the central government.
Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) Managing Director NVS Reddy explained that the Phase-2 expansion will be divided into two parts: Phase-2 A and Phase-2 B. Phase-2 A will cover five corridors, spanning 76.4 kilometers across 54 stations, with an estimated cost of ₹24,269 crore. The DPR for this portion has already been prepared. The DPR and related documents for Phase-2 B, which includes the new routes to Medchal and Shamirpet, are expected to be ready within three months. The entire Phase-2 project is a joint venture between the Telangana government and the central government.
The Paradise-to-Medchal route will pass through key areas such as Tadbun, Bowenpally, Suchitra Circle, Gundlapochampally, Kandlakoya, and the Outer Ring Road (ORR) exit. Similarly, the JBS-to-Shamirpet corridor will cover locations like Vikrampuri, Kharkhana, Tirumalagiri, Lothukunta, Alwal, Bolarum, Hakimpet, Tumkunta, and the ORR exit.
This Metro expansion is expected to significantly enhance transportation options for residents in northern Hyderabad, easing traffic congestion and improving accessibility to different parts of the city.
