Golconda Fort's Golf Course Expansion Raises Concerns
The golf course inside Golconda Fort is expanding, affecting historic sites. At Naya Qila, the fort’s moat, which once stored water to prevent invasions, is slowly disappearing. Large amounts of soil are being dumped in the area, possibly to make space for a new golf course as part of expansion plans.
Locals claim that medieval gardens and other historic areas are being converted into a golf course despite public objections. According to heritage activist Mohd Habeebuddin, soil has been poured over green spaces, and trees have been burned illegally. He also mentioned that several important historical structures, including the Baobab Tree (Hatiyan ka Jhad), towers (burjs), a large cannon, and two mosques, are now restricted to visitors. Many people are upset about these activities, but access to the site remains limited.
Naya Qila is an extended archaeological site of Golconda Fort. It contains ancient monuments, a lake, and the famous Baobab Tree. Over the past two decades, much of this historic site has been converted into a golf course. Habeebuddin urged the government to relocate the golf course and open the area to tourists. He also highlighted the presence of three lakes – one inside Naya Qila and two outside – that need protection.
Even a reporter from The Hans India was denied entry to one of the monuments inside Naya Qila. A security guard informed them that visitors are currently only allowed to see the Hatiyan ka Jhad, while access to other sites remains restricted.
