GHMC to Initiate Special Campaign to Curb Chikungunya Cases

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is launching a special campaign to prevent the spread of chikungunya. Starting on October 3, the GHMC will carry out anti-larvae operations to stop mosquito breeding, which causes the disease. GHMC Commissioner Amrapali Kata instructed her team to survey the entire Greater Hyderabad area.

The Commissioner emphasized that special measures, like anti-larval operations and fogging, should be done in areas where chikungunya cases are reported. She recommended covering 50-100 houses in the nearby region. Officials are also asked to inspect locked houses, construction sites, function halls, and open plots. Additionally, they should educate members of Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) about how to prevent the spread of the disease.

Amrapali Kata further instructed officers to spread awareness about the importance of clearing water from storage tanks, drums, and coolers. She also advised removing items like empty coconut shells and tyres that can collect water. To tackle stagnant water, she suggested covering pits, releasing oil balls in dirty water, and adding Gambusia fish to fresh water to control mosquito breeding.

The Commissioner also directed teams to focus on apartment buildings and cellars for the anti-larvae operations. She asked officials to collect details of chikungunya patients, including their addresses, and ensure that these cases are properly recorded in both government and private hospitals. Lastly, she stressed that large-scale entomology programs should be conducted to control the spread of chikungunya in the affected areas.
