GHMC Takes Action and Demolishes 89 Dilapidated Structures

In Hyderabad, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has demolished 89 buildings that were identified as dilapidated. This action is part of the city’s efforts to prepare for the monsoon season.

The GHMC has also repaired, vacated, or seized 146 other structures. These buildings are among the 566 identified as unsafe during a pre-monsoon survey. Most of these structures are located in the Charminar zone. The GHMC is committed to continuing its efforts to address these buildings during the monsoon, as old and weakened structures pose a risk during heavy rains.

To manage this issue, the civic body conducted a survey to identify buildings that are in poor condition. They have taken steps such as verifying structural stability, issuing notices, and planning demolitions. In some cases, they have advised residents to vacate, seized buildings, or directed repairs. The survey identified 566 unsafe buildings across six GHMC zones: LB Nagar (75), Charminar (154), Khairatabad (123), Secunderabad (132), Serilingampally (33), and Kukatpally (49). People living in areas with uneven terrain or near old walls have been warned to move for safety.

On Monday, the Chief City Planner held a review meeting with local police officers. They were instructed to take swift action to ensure safety. Measures include counseling residents to leave dangerous premises and seizing unsafe structures. Additionally, the meeting reviewed ongoing cellar excavations, emphasizing the need to complete retaining walls quickly and halt new excavations during the monsoon. Excavated areas are to be barricaded to prevent accidents.
