The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Standing Committee has been elected without any opposition. This happened after two corporators from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) withdrew their nominations.
For the first time in 10 years, Congress corporators have secured seats on the committee. The BRS did not contest because they did not have enough numbers, allowing the committee to be formed without a vote.
A total of 17 nominations were submitted: 8 from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM), 7 from Congress, and 2 from BRS. Since the BRS withdrew, the 15-member committee was elected without any competition. It now consists only of AIMIM and Congress members.
The final committee members include eight from AIMIM and seven from Congress. The GHMC has a total of 150 corporators. However, the current strength is 146 because two members passed away and two others became MLAs. Among them, there are 39 BJP corporators, 42 from BRS, 24 from Congress, and 41 from AIMIM.
To form the committee, at least 74 corporators must support the candidates. In the previous term, the committee included seven members from AIMIM and eight from BRS.
Since no party has a clear majority, BRS had previously secured the mayor’s seat with support from AIMIM. For the last three terms, the committee was mainly controlled by BRS and AIMIM members.
