The Mother and child hospital super specialty and other specialised centres in Gandhi Medical College will be inaugurated on August 16. Health Minister T Harish Rao made this announcement during the graduation ceremony of the college. He praised the progress in medical education and emphasized the need for a strong healthcare system. Rao expressed his vision for medical practice, stating the importance of nurturing skilled doctors.
Rao connected the history of Telangana to the evolution of Gandhi Medical College. He mentioned that the college started as a private institution in 1954 and became a government medical college in 1956. He also highlighted the limited growth of medical colleges in the past, especially during the rule of undivided Andhra Pradesh. Telangana now has the highest number of MBBS seats per lakh population in the country, and ranks second in post-graduate studies.
The minister urged the graduates to consider working in government hospitals. He announced plans to introduce reservations in postgraduate programs for those serving in government healthcare institutions, as a way to reward their commitment to public service. Rao encouraged the graduates to understand the nobility of their profession and compared doctors to sentinels guarding borders and farmers sustaining the nation.
Rao also mentioned the increasing number of international patients coming to Hyderabad for treatment. He stated that Hyderabad is becoming a global healthcare destination, with its reputation as an IT, vaccine, pharmaceutical, and healthcare hub gaining recognition worldwide.
