As mango season approaches, officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have started a special drive to check fruit vendors. On Wednesday, food safety officers visited Mozamjahi Market to ensure that vendors are not using harmful carbide to ripen mangoes.
During the inspection, officials visited several fruit shops, including Balaji Fruit Merchant, Kashmir Fruit House, NSB Fruit House, Medina Fruit House, and Crispy Fruit House. The inspection team included GHMC food safety officers, lab technicians, an assistant food controller, and a police task force team.
After the inspection, fruit vendors were reminded that using carbide for ripening is strictly banned. They were asked to follow the guidelines set by the Telangana Food Safety Commissioner and use only approved substances. Officers also stressed that all ripening methods must follow the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006.
