Experts say strong English skills lead to more opportunities

Karimnagar: Namratha, an English lecturer at Mahatma Jyothiba Pule Government Residential Degree College in Kazipet, was invited to speak at a one-day webinar titled “English for Employability.” The event was organized by Government City College and Government Degree College in Kukatpally, Hyderabad.

The webinar was coordinated by several faculty members including Principal Dr. P. Bala Bhaskar, Academic Guidance Officer Dr. N. Alivelu Mangamma, Convener Dr. Adi Ramesh Babu, and Dr. Md. Jaleel. Other organizers included Dr. Krishna Chandra Keerti, K. Srikanth, J.V. N. Mallikarjuna, YVN Sunitha, and A. Vishweshwara Sharma. More than 100 students from different locations joined the session online.

During her talk, Namratha explained that English is more than just a language—it is a tool that opens doors to many career opportunities. She pointed out that many students struggle with fluency, confidence, and writing skills. However, she encouraged them not to be afraid of making mistakes. Everyone starts somewhere, and the key to improvement is practice and determination.

Namratha shared simple tips to improve English skills. She recommended regularly reading newspapers, books, and online articles to learn new words and expressions. She also emphasized the importance of listening to English through podcasts, TED Talks, and movies to understand pronunciation and tone.

Speaking practice, she said, is the most important part. She urged students to participate in debates, give presentations, and have conversations in English. Overcoming the fear of making mistakes is an important step toward fluency. Mastering English can help students land better jobs, communicate effectively, and build self-confidence.

Namratha noted that even with modern technology, English remains essential for global communication, research, and innovation. She ended her speech by quoting Jonathan Culver: “The English language is a work in progress.”

The webinar concluded with a vote of thanks from A. Vishweshwara Sharma, Assistant Professor of English at GDC Kukatpally.
