The women’s reservation bill, which was passed in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, is now being discussed in Rajya Sabha. The bill aims to provide 33% reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state Assemblies. It is likely to be passed today.

During the morning session of Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his gratitude to the MPs for passing the bill in the Lower House.

The Lower House passed the women’s reservation Bill with near unanimity: 454 votes in favor and two against it. Union Home Minister Shah assured the Lower House of a transparent process to identify seats to be reserved for women.

In the Rajya Sabha, there was a heated debate over the Women’s quota Bill. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge criticized BJP chief JP Nadda for stating that the bill will only come into force after the 2026 census. Kharge urged the implementation of the bill now.

JP Nadda, on the other hand, attacked the Congress for demanding the enforcement of the Women’s Reservation Bill without the delimitation process. He questioned what would happen if Wayanad or Amethi were reserved and if the Opposition would not blame them then.
