Drought-weary farmers in MBNR rejoice as heavy showers bring tears of joy

The heavy rains in Mahabubnagar district over the past three days have helped the drying crops and relieved distressed farmers. Among the five districts in the region, Mahabubnagar urban region received the highest rainfall of 4.5 cm, followed by Narayanpet with 2 cm, Nagarkurnool with 1.6 cm, and Gadwal with 1.4 cm. The overall rainfall average in Mahabubnagar district was 2.9 cm. The rain has filled small ponds and lakes, providing enough water for rainfed crops like Jawar, Bajra, Maize, and Cotton for at least 15 days. However, some farmers believe that the lack of rain in the past 30 days has affected the growth of dry land crops. For example, a farmer named Bheema Nayak has noticed that his cotton crop is struggling to survive and may not yield the same output as last time. Another farmer named Tulasi Ram has similar concerns about his Jowar crop. Despite these challenges, the recent rains have brought relief to farmers after a long period of dry weather.
